The Opportunity

Futures Without Violence is seeking an experienced and mission-driven Director of Finance & Operations to play a key role in the organization’s finance and operations at a pivotal time of growth and complexity. With a $23 million annual budget, $85 million in net assets, two related real estate entities, and the highly anticipated launch of the Courage Museum, this role is essential to the organization’s long-term financial health and operational effectiveness.

The Director will provide strategic financial leadership of the museum, oversee core accounting functions, and partner in overall organizational financial management. This includes leading budgeting, audit, cost analysis, and internal controls. Additionally, overseeing facility management, space rental programs, and guest services. The Director collaborates closely with the museum leadership, external partners, and internal key stakeholders in the development and implementation of the new museum and works closely with the CFO/COO and Director of Grants and Contracts Administration to support enterprise-wide decision-making, financial planning, and process improvements.

The Director will manage and mentor the accounting team, the museum finance director, and the facility assistant director.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Leadership & Strategy

  • Provide strategic thought partnership to the CFO, museum leadership, and Director, Grants and Contracts Administration on long-range planning, forecasting, risk management, and sustainability
  • Contribute to cross-organizational planning and leadership efforts, ensuring financial perspectives are integrated into decision-making
  • Partner on museum business plan development and strategy
  • Manage banking relationships and other business partners
  • Liaise with Board finance and audit committees

Accounting & Facility Operations

  • Lead day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, banking, credit card activity, fixed assets, and general ledger management
  • Maintain accurate and timely financial records for the organization and its affiliated real estate entities
  • Maintain accounting policies and procedures
  • Oversee facility management and guest services, ensuring safe, cost-effective, and smooth operations

Team Leadership & Collaboration

  • Supervise and support the Accounting Manager, Staff Accountant, Museum Finance Director, and Assistant Facility Director, providing mentorship, development, and oversight
  • Foster strong collaboration with the Director of Grants and Contracts Administration, Museum leadership, and Head of Departments to ensure aligned financial management and operational effectiveness across the organization.
  • Promote a team culture that values learning, continuous improvement, and shared responsibility

Financial Reporting & Analysis

  • Lead monthly, annual close, and SOX compliance controls and processes, including review of journal entries, bank and investment accounts analysis and reconciliations, and internal reports
  • Prepare timely, consolidated financial statements, P&L, and cash flow projections, and annual budget for internal stakeholders and the Board of Directors.
  • Oversee asset inventory (capital and gift shop) and reporting
  • Responsible for cost management analysis, including space rental rates and other allocations (e.g., IT and communications)

Audit, Compliance & Internal Control

  • Manage the annual audit process and serve as the primary liaison with external auditors.
  • Coordinate preparation of Form 990 and other regulatory filings
  • Ensure compliance with accounting policies, strong internal controls, and adherence to GAAP, and compliance with all applicable federal and state regulations
  • Lead the organization’s negotiation of its annual indirect cost rate with federal agencies

Systems & Process Improvement

  • Drive modernization of systems and processes, including automation of manual tasks and upgrades to financial tools and platforms
  • Identify opportunities to improve financial workflows and increase efficiency across departments
  • Serve as an internal champion for the adoption of finance best practices and user-friendly systems

The ideal candidate is a seasoned finance and operations professional with deep nonprofit accounting expertise and a strong leadership presence. Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in accounting, finance, or related field; CPA (or equivalent) strongly preferred
  • At least 15 years of progressive finance and accounting experience in the nonprofit sector, with 5+ years in a senior leadership role
  • Proven expertise in nonprofit financial management, compliance, and reporting—particularly with federal grants and restricted funds
  • Experience preparing audited financial statements, managing audits, and overseeing internal control systems
  • Strong command of accounting software (e.g., Financial Edge/Blackbaud) and advanced Excel skills
  • Experience with facility and operations management
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and manage a high-performing team
  • Experience with systems upgrades, automation, or technology implementation is strongly desired
  • Familiarity with construction project accounting, real estate entities, or museum operations is a plus

Compensation, Benefits, & Work Environment

This is a full-time, exempt position. The salary range starts at $185,000 annually. This role is eligible for step increases as part of our commitment to thriving wages for all staff. FUTURES offers excellent medical, dental, and vision coverage, plus tax-advantaged Flexible Spending Arrangements for Health Care and Dependent Care. FUTURES employees can take advantage of generous sick and vacation benefits including 13 paid holidays, 3 weeks of vacation to start, 12 days of sick and safe leave per year, and an employer-contributed 401k retirement plan.
